Defining the field

As a kindergarten teacher, my use of technology is minimal due to the age of my students.  However, to define it would be centering on the utilization, management, delivery and application.  I have many readily available technology aspects that I use in my classroom such as video streaming, testing materials and various other websites.  This allows me to have access to material that may not be in the textbook curriculum.

The Dick, Carey and Carey model encompasses the six characteristics of instructional design.  The first aspect, learner centered, is addressed by allowing instruction to be revised.  Goal oriented design is addressed by assessing needs to identify goals.  Both of these aspects allow the instructor to change material based on the needs of the learner.  By writing performance objectives the design has meaningful performance.  Through formative and summative evaluation one can be sure the design is reliable and valid.  The Dick, Carey and Carey model is a continuous model that allows instruction to be revised, learners  and context to be analyzed which address the “empirical, iterative, and self-correcting” aspect of instructional design.  Finally by allowing instruction to be revised, assessing needs to identify goals and analyzing the learners and context, this model address the aspect of design relating to team effort.
I am constantly adding material from technology to my lessons.  This allows me to see if my students need more instruction, less instruction or a different form of instruction over various objectives.  Through my ETEC classes I have begun to include more technology in my classroom that my students seem to enjoy.

In K12 education the World Wide Web and internet are making learning more mobile for students.  Students can access their textbooks online, material covered on teacher websites and various search engines make learning unending.   There are also ways that parents can access their students’ grades and materials being taught as well.  This allows for the students’ education to be a family effort.  In high education and adult education there is access to distance learning and online classes.  This allows students and teachers to be more flexible on when, where and how they learn or teach the material.  Thus, students can help at home if needed or work if needed while still getting their education.   From personal experience, I have enjoyed being able to work on my Masters from the privacy of my home.
